Your Wix store is not complete if you don’t upload products to it. It can be intimidating if this is your first time but no worries, we will hold your hand every step of the way.
This article is part of a series of posts focusing on building your Wix online store. We set the goal of making it possible to do so in one weekend.
Let’s begin, shall we?
Step 0: Login to your account
You need to access your Wix online store if you are going to add products to it.
To login your account on Wix, start by navigating to the homepage.
The image and theme may change but the layout won’t change much. At the top right of the homepage, you will have the option to Log In, or Get started. You can use Google to Sign In if that is your preference. It is faster than writing your email and password down; it is safer too.
If you choose to Sign in with Google, follow the process to completion. Google will ask for verification and that is pretty much all you’ll need to do.
If you click on Log In, you’ll get multiple options to log in. Note how you can use this to Sign up as well.
Choose between Google, Facebook or Apple, and follow the instructions from there. The other alternative is to type in your email and password.
Go to Dashboard
After successful log in or sign up, Wix will redirect you to your account home. It looks something like this.
It has a list of your websites. Pick the one with your online store and click on it.
Go to Store Products
Wix will direct you to your online store dashboard. This is where you control everything related to your website. It looks similar to this.
There are two ways to get to the products page. The one you will use often is the one highlighted in red labeled, ‘Store Products’. You can also click the Add Product option which is available if your online store is new.
Clean the Products Page
Upon clicking either of the buttons, Wix directs you to the products page. It contains a list of products with information on each. New pages have placeholder products and look like this.
The first time I navigated to this page, it had my local currency on the prices. You can change the prices to a different currency if you will be operating worldwide. It is a simple process that you should do before you upload any product otherwise all your prices will be in the default currency.
Delete Placeholder Products
We will need to delete the current products so we can start from a blank slate.
Start by selecting all of the products.
Click on More Actions at the top of the page then click Delete.
Wix will ask you to confirm your decision to delete these products. Go ahead and confirm.
Now we have a blank products page to work with.
New Products
There are two buttons you can click to add products to your online store. Both of them are labeled New Product. Go ahead and click either.
Choose the type of product you are selling: physical or digital product.
I’ll choose Physical Product for this store.
Add Product Details
Wix directs you to the page where you will add the product’s details.
Add Product Title
At the top of the page, you’ll see that your product lacks a title. Add it by clicking on that section and input your desired title.
You’ll notice the title is also the name of the product. When you type onto one, the other field auto-populates.
Add Images
The next step is to add product images or videos.
Wix enables you to add images from all sources. You can upload images from Facebook, Instagram, Deviant Art, Dropbox, Vimeo and Dribbble. Click Upload Media to choose where your images will be uploaded from.
I’ll be uploading images of an Ausmas Rose. To add multiple images to your product simultaneously, click on Ctrl and click on the images you want. This way you can highlight several images.
Click on the Add to Page button on the bottom right. You’ll now have your images.
Add Basic Information
In the basic information section, we only need to add the description because we already added the name.
You can add a ribbon to your product. Think of a ribbon as a simple poster about the product. A few words are enough.
Add Category
Before we move on too far, remember to add categories to your products. They not only help you organize your products, but they also help your customers find them quicker.
Click Create Category to get started on your categories if you have none. You can create new categories here and apply them to the product you are uploading.
Add more Info
More details about the product go into the info section. Your customers would appreciate a well described product. Think of the most sought after information on the type of product and input it in this section. Click on the Add an Info Section button.
It opens up a modal where you will input more information about the product.
Click OK to save. Let’s now add prices.
Add Product Price
Scroll down to the product price section.
The first entry is for the price of the product. Notice how the price is in dollars, $. This is because I changed it earlier, otherwise, I would be uploading my products in my local currency.
You can add discounts to specific products by switching on the ‘On sale’ button.
Once you enter the discount amount, in dollars or percentage, the sale price is calculated automatically.
Below the discount section, you have the price per unit section. Here you provide your customers with information on how much your product costs per unit. You set the unit you want to use with the default being in grams. For those who use the odd imperial system, you can change to that in the settings.
In the last row, you will enter the cost of goods. This is important and makes it possible to calculate your taxes and profits.
Add Custom Text (Optional)
Some products need the customer to provide more information. If you are selling engraved watches, the customer could tell you what they would like written on it. You can make it a mandatory field.
Add Product Options (Optional)
Next, add the product options. Other platforms may refer to these as product variants. These could be shoe sizes for shoes, number sizes for clothes, material used or color of product. It all depends on the products you have.
Below this, you can choose to set the prices of each of these variants. Click on the switch variant for this.
You set how much the variant costs in terms of how much less or more than the initial price you had set earlier, like I’ve done below.
There is also a shipping weight field for each of the variants. The weight is important if you intend to set a shipping rate based on weight.
Click Apply when you are done to set the variant prices.
A new product variant section will pop up. It contains the prices you’ve set.
See how it has an edit button should you wish to edit any of the prices on the variants.
Set Inventory and Shipping
This section is present if your product doesn’t contain variants. If your product has variants then you will enter this information per variant. The necessary information to keep inventory is the number of units available, the product’s SKU(Stock Keeping Unit) and its shipping weight. A Stock Keeping Unit is a unique code that you give to a product or its variants that will help you keep track of it.
You can check how the shipping weight of a product is used in setting its shipping rate.
Add Pre-Order (Optional)
Wix has this neat feature that allows you to take pre-orders. A pre-order is when you take orders for a depleted product or one that is yet to arrive. You avoid disappointing your customers or saying no to those who are ready and willing to buy, and have the patience to wait.
It is courteous to add a pre-order message such as when your customer should expect the product. Sometimes, the pre-orders may be too great and it would make sense to set a limit. Your store will stop taking orders once this limit is hit. For more tips on how pre-ordering works, check out this Wix article.
Add Subscriptions (Optional)
The last option you get is allowing subscriptions. Your customers can subscribe to your product, whether digital or physical. You enable recurring payments and they get the product delivered to them as frequently as both parties agree to. Most subscriptions are monthly but with Wix you can do weekly, monthly and yearly subscriptions. You can also choose how many times within each period.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind when you want to offer subscriptions. The first is that you can’t offer a subscription to a product that is still on pre-order. The second is that this feature is only available for Premium Business plans.
Save Product
At this point, we have added every detail required to our product. You know the drill, we now save the product details. There is no pressure to be perfect because you can always edit or delete anything you dislike.
Click on Save at the top of the page.
Congratulations
We have uploaded our first product into our Wix online store. You’ll see it listed on the products page.
If you are in the process of setting up your online store, you’ll need to set up payments which we will do in the next article. We wish you all the best as you begin this journey.
See you on the next one!
